THE BUDGET CRISIS
As you may have read, the California Legislature is in a budget crisis. There is simply not enough revenue to pay their commitments. No program has been cut deeper in the last 18 months than the school budget.
The result: To help get the state through the budget crisis, the Legislature has gone to the well, drawing out funds that should go to schools. Many, many funds have been taken from a budget that was already inadequate.
How did our school funding get so bad so fast? The truth is, it didn’t happen overnight. It began in the late 70’s, when California changed the rules of school funding. Previously, local property taxes went to local schools. Initiatives like Prop 13 changed that, gathering all property tax revenue in a pool, and doling it out to local school districts according to a set formula.
The net result: Our schools took a budget hit. And the hits kept coming.
Then came the roundhouse kick: Last year’s budget crisis. Since early 2009, in response to reduced state funding, Buckeye Union School District has been forced to make millions in reductions and adjustments. Most recently the Buckeye Union School District has self-certified that it will be unable to meet its financial obligations in 3 years. The Buckeye Education Foundation is attempting to help fill this budget gap.

The ongoing state budget crisis has put your child’s education at risk.
Once, California schools were a model for the nation. Today, California’s per-student funding is near the very bottom of all 50 states—and with it, the quality of our schools.
The Buckeye Education Foundation has been founded to help keep our schools at the high level we expect in our community. The Foundation will support programs such as fine arts and science, Music, Art, PE, Counseling, GATE. Programs that are essential to a well-rounded education. Programs that are rapidly disappearing from our schools and schools all over California.
Things we used to take for granted—things we should be able to take for granted—are no longer covered by state funding: Music, Art, PE Teachers, and Librarians.
Even class sizes are under threat, thanks to the latest round of state budget cuts. The Foundation can help restore class sizes to previous student/teacher ratios.
HOW CAN YOU HELP...Donate your time and money to the Foundation. For example, a donation to the Foundation of $250 per student could accomplish all of the following:
(Note: These are examples. Actual funding decisions will be made by the foundation with input from the district, school board and community).
